This is a strong indication that the dear people of Nigeria, and indeed Africa, need an avenue such as this to harness the beautiful cultural heritage of their race. This will in no little way contribute to the diversity currently enjoyed by the multicultural British society and chiefly, our children.
The event was the pinnacle of all the cultural events organized by all the groups and bodies in the UK during 2007 and recent years. The idea emanated from the need to educate the many British born Nigerians who may not have been to Nigeria and for those have long lost touch with recent happenings back home. More so, we aim to use this rich medium to showcase all the different cultures of a country so abundantly endowed with human and natural resources before the world. We are contributing through this medium to the image laundering of Nigeria, which is paramount at this stage in the resuscitation of our global stature. One of our aims is to restore her peopleʼs pride in Nigeria.
This project has therefore become a child of necessity. This is especially true due to the negative image promoted by the world media following the unscrupulous acts of a limited few over the last decade. We wish to counter some of these misconceptions through the tailor-made programmes which we have carefully arranged to meet and surpass this noble goal of ours.
We arranged different workshops to attend to some of the inimitable domestic problems faced by Nigerian families here in the UK; especially those of language, cultural identity and family ties. We must reiterate the importance of ʽfamily hoodʼ, which has been imbibed in us and thus strengthens us as a united entity, but which can be seen as lacking in the UK culture, and which should be preserved among those who have it.
We do not merely long to follow in the footsteps of the Caribbean (Nothing Hill) Carnival held every summer, but to take the spirit of conviviality to a greater level. The carnival displayed the diverse cultural heritage of Nigeria before the world, thus placing us on the world map; where we rightly belong, and allowing us to be recognized as one of the most innovative and vibrant black communities in the UK.
Nigerian carnival UK, 2007 was an occasion for the sons and daughters of our dearly beloved country to come out en mass to fraternize in an atmosphere that has never before been witnessed anywhere in the world. The childrenʼs section bubbled with numerous activities from face painting to food tasting and from historical quizzes to football tournaments. The adult section also witnessed several cultural displays including the parade of dancers from the three major ethnic groupings of Nigeria. We have been inundated with requests for a reprise and as such, would like it to be bigger and even better next year, 2008.
This is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. The Nigerian Carnival 2007 has opened the door to many such ventures in future. The show brought together Nigerians in one accord, and provided a platform for the key players to come together in a collaborative effort to bridge the cultural gap that exists amongst the Nigerian children and youths who have not had the opportunity of learning the traditions and cultures of their fatherland on a first hand basis.
2008 will be a greater year for the entire people of Nigeria and Africa and indeed, lovers of African heritage to come together in a spirit of harmony to have the time of their lives.
To make it more structured, we have decided to add a little more for all the different age grades and people from other parts of the world. For instance, we will have the MAIN STAGE (where the main activities will be held), the YOUTH STAGE (which will be tagged, ʽI AM THE FUTUREʼ) and the last one will be for FRIENDS OF NIGERIA (where multi-ethnic and multi-cultural activities will be on display). The later, we hope, will be used to educate those who wish to know more about Nigeria; the giant of Africa.
We hope 2008 will bring in good tidings for Nigeria and the dear people of the world. God Bless.
